What is egg freezing?

Egg freezing is a type of assisted reproductive treatment that can provide flexibility for a person’s reproductive options by preserving eggs at a younger age. Female fertility begins to decline more rapidly in a person’s late twenties, and the continued loss of eggs associated with this decline results in increased rates of miscarriage, chromosomal (genetic) abnormalities, and infertility.

Egg freezing involves taking a series of medications which stimulate the ovaries to develop multiple eggs in the one cycle. These eggs are then collected from the ovaries under sedation during an egg collection procedure in theatre. The Embryologist brings them back to the embryology laboratory where the eggs are assessed and then prepared for the freezing process, called vitrification. Once frozen, the eggs are stored in our dedicated cryostorage room inside liquid nitrogen tanks at –196 degrees Celsius.

At a later date, the frozen eggs can be thawed and combined with sperm to create embryos.

Who is a good candidate for egg freezing?

Egg freezing can be a good option for many people.

Eggs can be frozen for medical purposes. For example, those undergoing chemotherapy, with a low egg reserve, undergoing gender transition or considering treatment for endometriosis may consider freezing eggs to preserve their fertility.

Alternatively, eggs can be frozen for non-medical purposes. It can offer peace of mind for those who are not yet ready for a baby.

What are my chances of having a baby using frozen eggs?

Your chances of conceiving from frozen eggs are dependent on a range of factors.

Firstly, your age at the time of freezing your eggs is a big determining factor. As we age, the quality of our eggs declines and the chances of producing chromosomally abnormal eggs increases. Furthermore, the number of eggs that can be successfully grown and retrieved from our ovaries typically reduces with age. Generally, the earlier you freeze your eggs, the better.

Secondly, the number of eggs you have frozen will influence your chances of conception. Not every egg that is frozen will survive the thawing process and, of those that do survive, not every egg will fertilise and create a usable embryo. Sometimes, to have a good chance of conception, you may need to have more than one egg collection to have enough eggs frozen.

The costs and potential risks associated with egg freezing should be weighed up by each individual, against the benefit of increased reproductive options.
