SpermMobil is a solution that can be added to sperm samples at the time of ICSI insemination to temporarily enhance their motility. Motility refers to the sperms’ ability to swim, and acts as an indication to the Embryologist that the sperm is viable and suitable for injection into an egg. To achieve ICSI success it is essential that the Embryologist identifies motile sperm, especially in samples exhibiting minimal or borderline motility.
SpermMobil contains the compound theophylline, which increases oxygen consumption and metabolic activity in the sperm, producing energy. For this reason, SpermMobil is often informally described as a ‘shot of caffeine’ for sperm.
At Oasis Fertility Centre, SpermMobil is offered free of cost. The Embryology team will use SpermMobil at their discretion to stimulate motility in certain sperm samples.
