In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

IVF can offer a path to pregnancy when conceiving naturally has been difficult. At Oasis, we provide personalised fertility care, combining experienced specialists, advanced treatment and compassionate support throughout your IVF journey.

What is IVF ?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive treatment designed to help you become pregnant. In simple terms, it involves bringing eggs and sperm together in a carefully controlled laboratory environment to support fertilisation and early embryo development.

IVF works by gently recreating what would normally happen in the fallopian tube, but in a way that gives us more visibility and control. Instead of releasing just one egg, as happens in a natural cycle, IVF allows us to collect several eggs at once, increasing the opportunity to develop a healthy embryo. Once collected, a fresh or frozen semen sample is carefully prepared to remove less active sperm and debris, allowing our embryology team to select the healthiest, most motile sperm for fertilisation.

The eggs and sperm are then combined under carefully controlled laboratory conditions and left overnight, allowing the sperm to naturally fertilise the eggs as they would in the body. The following day, our embryologists assess each egg for signs of fertilisation, confirming that the DNA from the egg and sperm has combined and early embryo development has begun.

IVF gives us greater visibility and control over the fertilisation and early development of embryos.

Things to consider before starting IVF

Before beginning IVF, there are a few important decisions to think about. Your specialist will guide you through these, so you feel informed and supported at every step.

At Oasis, we take the time to talk through these options with you, so you can make choices that feel right for you and your family.

The IVF Journey: Step by Step

Step 1

Ovarian stimulation and monitoring

Your IVF journey begins with medications that gently stimulate your ovaries to produce more than one egg, giving you a greater chance of developing viable embryos.

During this time, we'll monitor your progress closely with blood tests and ultrasound scans to see how your follicles (which contain the eggs) are developing. When the timing is right, you'll have a trigger injection to help the eggs mature and prepare for collection.

Step 2

Egg retrieval

Egg collection is a short, minimally invasive procedure performed under sedation for your comfort. Using ultrasound guidance, your doctor will collect the eggs from your ovaries, and the procedure usually takes around 15–20 minutes. Most patients go home the same day, and it's normal to feel some mild cramping or bloating afterwards.

Your eggs are then carefully assessed and placed into our laboratory to begin the next stage.

Step 3

Sperm collection

On the same day as egg collection, a sperm sample is prepared. This may be from a partner or a donor, depending on your treatment plan, and in some cases sperm can be collected surgically if needed.

Our laboratory team carefully prepares the sample to select the healthiest sperm for fertilisation.

Step 4

Fertilisation

Eggs and sperm are combined to create embryos. Standard IVF allows fertilisation to occur naturally, while ICSI involves injecting a single sperm directly into each egg. Your embryologist will recommend the most suitable approach.

Step 5

Embryo development and transfer

Embryos are monitored as they develop for up to 6 days. Usually around day 5, a suitable embryo is transferred to the uterus through a gentle procedure, while additional suitable embryos can be frozen for future use.

Around 2 weeks after egg collection, a blood test confirms whether you are pregnant. Our team will support you and guide you through the next steps, whatever the outcome.
