Expanding Access to Parenthood for All: A Landmark Shift in Fertility Care

At Oasis Fertility Centre, we believe that the dream of parenthood should be accessible to everyone—regardless of relationship status, sexual orientation, or gender identity. That’s why we’re thrilled to share a major policy shift that supports our commitment to inclusivity and equitable fertility care.

A New Definition of Infertility: A Win for Equality

In a long-overdue step toward equity, the federal government has officially adopted an expanded definition of infertility. This change acknowledges that fertility challenges extend beyond heterosexual couples and recognises the legitimate family-building needs of single individuals and the LGBTQIA+ community.

This means that more Australians—including single women and same-sex couples—can now access Medicare rebates for assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as IVF and IUI, without first being required to demonstrate “medical infertility” through repeated treatment failures.

Ged Kearney, Assistant Minister for Health, announced the change by affirming:
“For too long, single women and lesbians faced barriers when it came to accessing IVF. It was expensive, it was unfair, and it was just plain wrong.”

We at Oasis couldn’t agree more.

What This Means for You

This expanded definition aligns with updates from key reproductive health bodies like the Australian and New Zealand Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (ANZSREI), the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), and RANZCOG. It acknowledges infertility as:

“The inability to achieve a successful pregnancy based on a patient’s medical, sexual, and reproductive history, age, physical findings, diagnostic testing, or any combinations of these factors, and the need for medical intervention.”

In practical terms, this means that services recommended by your fertility specialist at Oasis may now qualify for Medicare rebates—removing financial roadblocks for many on their journey to parenthood.
